More artifacts available!

Perhaps the most frequent complaint from players over the years has been the way inactive players can hoard artifacts forever if they'd like. One of the first things the MAngband project team did was to make it impossible to house artifacts and today we've made another change. Starting today, all artifacts on inactive players (not logged in the last two months) will be reset. An extra 20% artifacts are now findable again :)

This is an on going policy and will continue. The removal of artifacts from inactive players isn't a completely automatic process (yet) so inactive players may get a few extra days grace here and there.

I'm not sure the players whose artifacts were reset will appreciate that this happened without warning... perhaps you should give them a replacement item, or maybe the art's value in gold?

This is nothing more than the continuation of the policy that'd been in effect on mangband.org for years.

Odds are if somebody hasn't played in two months (there are exceptions here) they they have lost interest, and won't remember what they had anyway.

Of course they'd see the missing slot and ask, but it's a fair policy.

Well I for my case, luckily saw this, and logged in with my chars. I think i was close to 2 month inactivity.

Currently I dont wanna play becuase of other duties (work, personal reasons and renovation of the flat). So I was lucky to see it.

Please announce at least a month before another policy change new rules ok? (Things like minimum login / play time per month or reduced inactivity periods...).

Hope that not many players will be surprised by this. Giving a replacement item or money would be fair i think.

Heh at least players were warned.
I connected to the TomeNET server a few weeks ago to find out all my chars that had artifacts were naked (not mentioning that the devteam changed the random artifact routine without warning, resulting in most random artifacts and ego items with abilities being made useless by property changes)... and I think I didn't play on the server for like 2 or 3 weeks. Basically without replacements I had to Q all the chars... and won't probably play there again.

There should be a more regular check on players that are not only inactive, but that saved in the dungeon. By checking the "high level alive" character web page on this site, you can see a few characters that have a positive dungeon depth displayed... but that didn't change for ages, meaning more or less that the player either forgot that char or quit playing the game. If arts were held by such chars, there is no chance to see them again :(

There are some prime houses that seem vacant, that is, owned but not used. What about those? That might need to have a longer time-out.

It's pretty rough to play a character for weeks or months, then have to go away (for whatever reasons) and come back and your house is owned by someone else! In the next version this won't really be an issue, as it will be possible to build your own houses. Of course, one could argue that this is even worse, someone built a house at a perfect location but they never return...

Today I've logged in as the following characters and sold their artifacts. So - artifacts have been replaced by gold (and an item telling that the artifact was sold).

The following characters had not been active in the last 6 months:

The following characters had not been active in the last 2 months:

Choronzon
Dardek
Didy
Drogo

Please notice that in order to sell the items I had to temporarily change the password. The passwords were then changed back but in case any of you can not log in, please contact me either by mail, forum pm or irc if you want me to reset the password for your character.

There should now be 30-40 more artifacts available again :)
