Re: Mangband.org rules

and, sadly, post 1.1.0, we've had our first set of real losses to players for simply not paying attention to what we consider long established rules. Any number of high level characters in game should be helping new folk gently by pointing out where behavior is a problem.

The Strain of Ghostly Powers

Thorbear inquired about how ghost spells work, so here's the scoop. Ghostly powers are handled by a simple table, repeated for every class. The spells are listed here by the level required Name Level Mana. Blink 1 1 Terrify 10 2 Confuse 15 3 Teleport 20 5 Nether bolt 25 10 Nether Ball 35 60 Darkness...

The Vibration hound breathes sound. You have been knocked out. Lorgan, Chief of the Easterlings is no longer stunned. Lorgan, Chief of the Easterlings hits you. Lorgan, Chief of the Easterlings misses you. Lorgan, Chief of the Easterlings misses you. Lorgan, Chief of the Easterlings misses you. The ...

Re: Soft biscuits

Actually, the reason biscuits are hard is they are made with unleavened bread, because leavened bread spoils very, very fast. Hardtack was, and is, the choice for the discerning adventurer who is away from a steady supply of food. (As would be jerky, of course, and corn fritters). More information c...

Re: *Winner* arts

Were this to be seriously considered, it certainly wouldn't be an automatic thing per winner, nor would it probably be common. Angus was a special case, based purely on his being so superb a player, and the only one who's ever won with *every* class. That type of legendary play is probably noteworth...

Re: What the ***?

Scene of Death doesn't have any way of considering the character's viewport at the time of death. Most likely, they were off screen, in which case un-known, so "it" was correct.

Re: More artifacts available!

This is nothing more than the continuation of the policy that'd been in effect on mangband.org for years. Odds are if somebody hasn't played in two months (there are exceptions here) they they have lost interest, and won't remember what they had anyway. Of course they'd see the missing slot and ask,...

Re: Mangband.org rules

Let me start this by agreeing with Warrior, so many interested responses here can only be a good thing. Let's move on from there a bit, I'd like to address a few points already raised, point by point. There have been a lot of good comments already, so let me add my take on these. Since I was one of ...

Re: Suggestion: Scores

Score is calculated as a combination of Exp and depth. the ghost/noghost and gold on hand only count after death.

There is actually a very interesting Wikipedia article about Grinding that addresses a lot of the pros and cons about limitations in player lives, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grind_%28gaming%29 I found this to be a very solid counterpoint to endless resurrections, and this was the basis for my...

Town Levels restored

The subterranean town levels have been restored, though no where near as nice as they'd been on Fink's server.

My apologies for the oversight.

(Thanks Jug for providing them).

The Secret of the Missing Dwarven Towns

Apparently the way this worked is there were special levels hand crafted by fink for the Dwarven halls. But these appear to have been lost when Fink departed the crowd. If somebody happens to have a copy of them, I can just plop them in, and the problem is solved. If not, then I'll have to try to re...
