Re: New Player tutorial mode
How would one query the help bot? That would make all the difference. Automatic first-time messages for each major action would be helpful. Here is what I'd call the 'first' real major actions: * Birth * Entering a store * Entering a dungeon * Picking up an item (with sub-class actions for this bein...

Re: Floating eye perma-paralysis sucks.
Hey, I like it! I like it a lot! Is it even possible for a monster to check whether an attack was successful??
Also, I found Fink's post count entertaining: 404.

Re: Focus on the New User
Yeah, a wiki would do very nicely! link? All the way at the top of every Forum page, next to Who's Playing link, there's a Library link. That's the Wiki I set up in December. I think I set it up to require registration, but that's rather painless and you get credited for your work. offtopic2: http:...

Re: Trees
The random number seed for the town is saved in the server savefile so the buildings are always the same. Unfortunately, this means that the trees are always in the same place. The town is generated exactly the same in every way, every time the town must be generated. The trigger is usually restarti...

Re: Our documentation sucks.
I've got a bunch of replies, but I'd like to condense it down to one post. Problem: We've got dozens of overlapping files, guides, faqs, docs, manuals, help files, and everything else scatterred all over the place. Half of them reference things that havent been in the game in eons, and the other hal...

Re: Multiple servers from one IP
Seed fertilized for great justice! Yes, it's a good idea! This is an excellent place (this thread and board) to discuss its implementation, too. AFAIK, to make this work, the metaserver needs to have a field for the port number. Crimson, is this possible with the current metaserver, or will it break...

Re: SCO loses!
Sun Micro has Solaris. It's a UNIX, yes, but SCO has been extorting everyone for a "license" to use anything remotely UNIX-like. That's why so many of us are glad to see them effectively stomped in court.

SCO loses!
I think this is news worthy, since this game has until very recently depended so heavily upon UNIX, and its heritage lies in UNIX. SCO has finally lost after all these years of court cases and extortion! See this Groklaw article From the article: The court concludes that Novell is the owner of the U...

Re: Artifact tax
Hey. I have an idea similar to the artifact tax that could also work. What if artifacts were a bit more susceptible to disenchantment attacks, regardless of the wielder's armor? And then, what if normal enchant scrolls didn't work and you had to buy special scrolls to re-enchant them? These would be...

Re: House tax
Hmmm. Renting and taxing are two different ideas. I could see renting "virtual apartments" in a shop-like scenario, or some as-of-yet uncreated generated map thing. You know, go upstairs from the Weapon Store to your 12x15 one bedroom apartment #107 on the 3rd floor. If you don't pay your rent, you ...

Big expensive status symbol items
What about this: We can give the wealthy players something to spend money on without punishing them via taxes, expiring goods, or removal of their items from the main game. I think some expensive "status symbol" type items (trophies? gold/jade/crystal statues? marble columns? potted palm trees? magi...

There are plenty of wilderness levels. Here's an exact figure, from defines.h: /* The number of wilderness levels we have allocated. */ #define MAX_WILD 4096 I've been toying with the OP's idea for around five years. I wanted to make a shop-only Scroll of (lesser/normal/greater) Expand House that yo...
