Tinman!

Heya guys!

For a while, I've wanted to try out a little idea that's been on my mind. So' I've updated my Ironman server with the change in question, and it's now up and running.

My ironman server continues to opperate pretty much as it has in the past - one death only, no recall, etc - except for one small change: you can now go up stairs. That's it.

I've taken to jokingly calling this idea Tinman MAngband, and I'm curious to see how it plays out. Were I to pursue this idea more fully, other features would be needed to accomodate the modified gameplay that arises from this change, but for now, I'm just thinking of it as a fun proof-of-concept.

So, give it a whirl, and let me know what you think! Good luck, and safe diving!

Oh, by the way, if you happen to have a character still alive on my old ironman server, your savefile is still present, and will work fine. Feel free to dive back in with your char Tinman-style ;)

For some reason, I'm not showing up on the meta.

In the meantime, feel free to hit Q at the server list when you first fire up your client, and manually connect to ironmangband.dyndns.biz.

See ya in the dungeon!

RIP Tinwarrior Fx71

Post by Fink » Sat 08.12.2007, 04:17

Hats off to Fx71, who pushed an HE warrior down to 1k, got sorted, and did his dive down to 2k. He died at 1950, after passing by some down-stairs, and opted instead to give Kavlax one more try ...

General Breakdown

Post by Fx71 » Sat 08.12.2007, 05:03

http://nopaste.snit.ch:8001/11735

I started with 18/30 strength, 18/20 dex, enough for 4 swings with a whip at level one. I found the sling I died using on 50', it was a Sling of Extra Shots (x2) (+12,+8), I never bothered to enchant above that. I dived fast and found a soft leather armor of resistance and a freezing longsowrd at somewhere between 500' and 800', before I hit any hounds that would quickly kill me without the resistance.
I entered 1000' somewhere in the neighborhood of level 14, and scummed 950' for a long time, I killed probably about 30 unique monsters on 950' alone, found 3 vaults, 10 or so pits, and 1 small greater vault. Saw my first greater vault in Mangband on this character and my first mithril plate. The greater vault netted me my helmet of might, the rapier of *Slay* evil, and about 50k. I scummed 950' some more following that, with about 30 ccws, and 5 healing pots, got bored of finding orc pits, and started a dive to 2000'.
Besides the rods and ammo, I started 1050' with about 15 healing pots, 35 ccws, 30 identify scrolls, 25 teleport scrolls, and about 10 magic maps. I explored any level that felt special, using magic maps, and acquired 5 exceptional, nothing great, but profitable to hold onto and sell.
At 1950' I bumped into Kavlax next to a zombie pit, he nexus'd me to 30 hp, with the help of some zombies. Giving me a chance to live and explore the level some. I bumped into the queen ant but was unable to kill her, I couldn't get past her summons. I found an exceptional Metal Scale Mail of Resistance, but had no IDs, so I didn't swap it out for my current armor of resistance. I decided to try Kavlax again, foolishly attributing the damage to the zombies, Kavlax quickly rolled me, as in before I could quaff a healing pot fast.

You should submit that character dump over at The Angband Ladder
:)
Great score!
Actually, hm, since it's Tinman... Maybe not. :/
Don't know how you other people feel, it's after all a variation on a variant, doesn't fully fit in with the pure Ironman dumps?

Once we get some more of the planned functionality into MAngband I'm sure we can get a dedicated Tinman ladder going, if not at oook then at mangband.org :)

While coding and testing some stuff for PWMAng I discovered that I couldn't register any PWMAng server to the meta either... something must be broken on the meta.

Jug sorted out the meta code, and got the Tinman server showing up on the meta.
