Yeah, I don't see any difference, I have nice big stack of 99.999.999$ sitting there in a house and I'm sure so do many others of the level 50's around. And those are the only ones who play deep enough to find the kinds of objects that I'm talking about, at least on a regular basis.
If a level 35 run into a GCV at 1700 and end up with a few exceptional items that would benefit from changes like this, well good for him, it's still rare enough to not be unbalancing I think.
One thing that could balance the end-game where we have all those zillions of cash just doing nothing would be the ancient ideas of creating either houses or new items.
Generally I'm not very much into allowing players to "buy" perfect items, actually I think thats almost the opposite to what MAngband is all about, at least for me. It's the thrill of finding something "perfect" thats the drive, not just ...buying it.
Houses however! Wouldn't everyone love to have just one really large house to put everything in instead of having 10 different houses, often spread all over town and the wilderness?
I know I'd pay 99.999.999 to be able to, say for example buy a whole level close to town and build there whatever I wanted.
But this again could easily be abused, other players, like filthy rich level 50 mages could buy everything around town and leave nothing for the others.
This is going kinda outside of the original thread, but it's an interesting idea. And possibly the only way high level people will ever be able to spend money without destroying balance/gameplay. Imagine if you could give each player limited (or unlimited) access to the building commands (including door/key creation) of one specific wilderness level.
However, with todays relatively ...easy attitude towards money at higher levels the game keeps a kinda friendly attitude that might get changed if money could buy that kind of "status".
So I'm not sure.

If we are blue-skying, I'd be a fan of instance houses. That is, you walk into a house, and you enter your own personal staticed "level".
I mention this only because i keep having instance-level ideas on other fronts.
