Let me guess... someone cleared the vault and saved on that level. When you logged on on the same depth, it wasn't reset yet...

Unlikely, since you'd need genocide to kill everything in the vault without clearing the traps or tunneling an outside wall (luring everything out implausible). I wouldn't imagine any players at 850 would have it... Still totally possible, but very interesting.

My current character has been wandering near that depth, and he's had a Geno scroll for 6-8 dives... Bought it in the black market one day.

I had a special feeling upon entering the level. Impossible. Also, the items were un-id'd.

Of course no one cleared the vault. He had removed the Traps. And no Monster without maybe Ghosts left it, the door is still closed. The RNG decided that you will find a empty vault. Be shure RNG will not forget to drop the Monsters later for you.^^

For what it's worth I've run into a monsterless vault once that I can remember. It was a vault similar to this. Maybe it is possible under strange circumstances.

Maybe someone found a mass banishment scroll and read it near that vault...

I thought we ruled that out after this:

But once again, it was ironman. Special feeling, and nobody was near the dungeon level I was at, and I know I read no such scroll, since other monsters were alive. And warrior has even seen this bug before.

... But is it a bug? Maybe the RNG God was pleased just this one time?

I think I have a picture of this monster-less vault somewhere... pretty sure no one could have geno'd it without me noticing, it was pretty deep IIRC.

I confirm the bug!

When playing on my server, I got a character pushed from stairs when going down. Mapped the sector and detected monsters around: no monsters at all... and the up staircase was generated out of sight. It was something like this:

#.#.....
#.#@...
#.#####
#...<....
#######

Sounds like the game engine tried to put some monsters (probably a pack) over the stair position, pushed away the character when placing it, and then failed to create the monsters... Note that monster creation *may* fail in rare circumstances: too many monsters generated, no "clean" floor around, no fitting monster race for the current depth... One of the problem is described in Ticket #845 of the bug database.
