Paladin encounters are just like our own characters... they have an xp counter which increases each time they progress in the hierarchy (by killing other paladins, which are usually representatives of other gods). They start as Novice Paladins, and as they gain more experience, they become full Paladins, and much later Knight Templars. So next time you find one in the dungeon... be prepared for a duel ;)

Related trivia: I thought of doing that with BMAngband long ago, and never did get around to it.

I know I've played some game where that actually did happen but I really don't remember what it was now...getting old
