What to play II: Spellcasting

After you've gotten a Half-Troll Warrior to about Level 20 and learned about macros, you should decide on whether you want to play a warrior, or a spellcaster. If you want to try your hand at spellcasting, pick one of these popular combos (where I have listed the spell types in order of quantity and quality):
Defensive spells increase resistances, increase armor class, and make it harder for monsters to hit you.
Offensive spells damage monsters and increase your ability to do more damage.
Utility spells include such spells as Teleport Self, Identify, Magic Mapping, Recharge.
Pick the one that fits your playing style best - check what scrolls, potions, staves, wands you use most often, and pick the class that provides equivalent spells.
- Dwarf Paladin - defensive, utility and offensive prayers, good melee fighters
- Hobbit Rogue - utility and basic defensive spells from the Mage books, stealthy assassins of the night
- Half-Elf / Gnome Mage - offensive, utility and defensive spells, hard to start but powerful later
