What to play I: Race/Class Combos for Newbies

Post by Berendol » Fri 31.01.2003, 03:22

I think all newbies should play a Half-Troll Warrior first. They're tough fighters. Learn the basics of the game with them, and try to play with that combination for a week if you're the type to play an hour or two every day.

Do you think a Half-Troll Warrior can win the game?

Yes, I do. The point of playing with this combination first is to learn the basics before introducing more complicated elements. Stuff like magic and prayers require macros and inscriptions to use competently, and that only complicate things for newbies. The classes that use them are physically weaker and more difficult to level up - requiring you to understand the game to succeed. Hey Domino, didn't you win several times with a warrior?

No.  No online instance of Mangband has been won with a warrior.  Dunno about any local instances..  Closest person was Irt with a Dwarven warrior with over 1400 hps.  He probably would have succeeded but ran into a nasty bug where Morgoth wasn't unique and summoned 2 more Morgoths to the battle.
