How do I beat MAngband [questions]

I read the strategy guides and have some questions:

1. I know warrior is the best class early game but do mages become better?

2. How do I pwn as a mage?

3. If I am diving for treasure, abusing going between levels, what is a good baseline for a mage?

Thanks, might post more questions later.

1. In the current instance (1.1.1), mages are *much* easier than warriors as soon as you get the killer spells (rift, mana storm, mass banishment, word of destruction); except for Morgoth and a few uniques (Tselakus, Maeglin), killing stuff becomes trivial at high level with a mage
2. The beginning is awfuly hard: you need to stay shallow, try to survive to level 11, learn Identify, get cash, buy +INT items and a source of regen; between fights... recover FULLY; try to find pits, group of easy monsters for xp; if you can, simply party with a warrior...
Low level strategy: not deeper than 250ft, Magic Missile + Phase Door
In the 10s: 500-1000ft, orc pits, Lightning Bolt (kills a line of monsters)
In the 20s: 1000-1500ft, T pits, Lightning Bolt (line), Acid Bolt (single target)
At level 35: 2000ft, U packs, q packs, Ds, Meteor + Rift
At level 42: 2500ft, scum for Balrog of Moria, U packs, uniques, Mana Storm + Rift (see Zal's thread about LOS)
High level: 3000ft and below, scum for wyrms or other "good" droppers, clean unique list, same Mana Storm + Rift strategy
For Morgoth, Tselakus, Maeglin: teleport the unique away, lay down a 5x5 to 10x10 square of runes in a room, Mana Storm until the unique starts to break the runes, Rift, repeat (without forgetting to replenish mana and heal self if needed)
3. Don't scum for levels with a mage, just set your depth at a shallower level and go down: going up is likely to kill you instantly if there's a pack of hounds or such pushing you from stairs...

OK, thanks, one more question:

Are mages better at killing at higher levels, compared to a ranger?

Rangers are much more powerful with their missiles. Mages do 400 dam with mana storm, but that spell destroys all loot on the ground and still has 14% fail at level 50. However mages have banishment spells, so they can choose what to kill.
