Killing Morgy with a mage

Post by PowerWyrm » Wed 28.11.2007, 12:30

What do you need to kill Morgy with a mage? I suppose GoI will help a lot, but do you still need *heals*? Here's how my mage looks like...
- stats: 18/130 18/200 18/130 18/*** 18/180 18/170
- AC: 190 (230 with spells)
- HP: 792 (832 with spells)
- Tohit: 43 (79 with spells)
- Todam: 39
- Speed: +24 (+34 hasted)
- all resists (PDSM)
- weapon: Ringil
Is that enough? Need more hps? dam? speed?

That looks about basic for a mage... Nice ac tho, I think you will be fine with fast reflexes.  Although a little more speed wouldn't be bad...Think trying to get base +30 speed so you have +40 speed would help put you ahead of morgy enough.

the real issue is resistance, and in this case dual.

care to elaborate with a quick Self Knowledge pot?
Are you not entertained?
Is this not what you came here for?

Resistance? A mage with PDSM and res spell shouldn't bother much...

The key to beating morg is to have lots of damage. I always use a damage ring to fight him, and having good Istari helps. Depending on your damage, mages that attack morg will notice that the fast regeneration is a big obstacle. Be prepared for the fight to last longer than it did with other classes, and stock some extra heal and mana potions for emergency use. *Heal* is rather unnecessary, since GoI always takes priority over HP recovery in situations where you are near-dead. Come to think of it, though, you have a lot of HP for a mage, so maybe you could bring some so that you won't need more than 2 normal heals if you take 600+ damage between GoI's.

Since earthquakes can cause stunning even when you are invulnerable, always be ready to heal because stunning subtracts directly from your damage.

About 30 speed with spells is fine to take on morg. I usually get this by using one speed ring and some boots of speed, but Ringil should cover one of those. Keep in mind that your reaction time is much more important. Also, don't prefix macros with more than one \e, don't spam heals, and don't spam GoI if you are at near-full HP.

Finally, make sure your INT is sustained!

I guess that's all it takes to fight morg. I wonder what you would need to fight morg without GoI?

Cool! Was hoping you'd chime in, Ashi :)

This is more than an academic question, since we do technically need to remove GoI from the game at some point (vanilla no longer uses it).

Recently I tried to find Vilya and the Necklace of the Dwarves to cover my stat/speed concerns... didn't find them. I was starting to get bored so I decided to try Morgy anyway. On my way, I found the Crown of Numenor (+3 int so GoI fail rate went down to 3%... better than 9% with 18/200 int, was a bit worried about failing GoI during the final fight... and +3 speed which raised my base speed to +27), a nice Orcish Shield to pump Str to 18/150... and some Istari gloves which to my surprise were (+3,+3) and promptly replaced my old (-1,-5) gloves. So with a little over 200 AC and 50 to-dam now I was ready for the big fight. Found Morgy at 5250ft... he was too close so I teleported first and enlightened the level. No vault... trying him anyway. So I cast all the support spells and waited in the upper left corner of the level. This time everything went fine... and quite fast. The fight lasted the duration of three GoIs (with minor health damage during the two turns without the invulnerability shield... and fortunately no spell failure)... I only used two heals (one for stunning, one after the second GoI wore off), one restore mana pot (had to geno dragons twice, after that Morgy summoned harmless Us, Ws and Ls) and one mushroom of restoring (didn't have sustain int). And that was it...
(Morgy was also kind enough to drop the One Ring...)

Wow, that sounds like it went like butter, PW! And getting the One Ring from Morg - nice! Y'know, I had never thought of the idea of fighting morgoth in the corner of the map, to limit the room - good thinking!

So, the one big question is, do you find the Ring ... precious?
