Auto-retaliator melee deadlock

Due to a critical problem in auto-retaliator (chars unable to teleport or do anything useful while engaged in melee with a monster), I've added a new inscription, !O, that can be put on the main weapon to bypass the auto-retaliator so that certain types of chars (in particular sorcerors and archers) don't waste energy in melee blows that can be used in shooting or casting spells.

Cool fix. I like it.
Now the inevitable what-if: What happens when you get hit by something that destroys your items?

This kindof seems like a hack. If you were playing a character that might want to melee sometimes but wants to be able to escape (warriors, rangers, paladins, rogues, priest, mage), then the bug still exists.
