The Adventures of Avenger

This forum seems a bit under-used, so I guess I'll start writing up some of the stuff that's happened to me in MAngband. I don't know how interesting any of this will be, but here it is:


So this one time me and Narchan were diving at 3050 feet and we met Azriel.  After building an anti-summoning corridor, we attacked him. I was wielding the Glaive of Pain, and Narchan was using Sting, so he died fairly quickly.  After going through his drops and drinking an RLL, I started looking through the rest of the level. I noticed a small group of monsters near a 4 room pit, and among them was a symbol I had never seen before; a white B.  We asked Maegdae, who was apparently on the surface at the time, what it was.  He told us it was Pazuzu, who upon further investigation turned out to be about 1000 feet OoD. I wanted to take him, but Narchan wasn't particularly excited about the prospects of facing a deep unique that far out of depth, so I decided to head over to him by myself and test his strength to see if maybe we could take him together. As soon as I got into the room just south of him, he woke up and started coming toward me. I immediately noticed, with no small amount of dismay, the great speed at which he was approaching. I considered teleporting, but he was nearly upon me, and I thought maybe I could take him in combat, hopefully killing him with Pain's massive damage before anything particularly grim happened to me. Well, he arrived and started to melee me. I wasn't able to inflict even one star of damage on him, but within a few rounds I was down to about a 2. I suddenly made up my mind to teleport away from him, but first I healed, because I was still using tele rings at that time, and they generally take awhile to activate. After a couple more rounds the teleport kicked in, and I took off the ring. Unfortunately, the ring activated once more, just before I took it off, and it landed me in the worst place I could've teleported to: right back in the room with Pazuzu. He ran up to me and we started round 2, but I had other plans, and they included my continued life, so I teleported yet again. I took off the ring in a safe location this time, and quickly recalled before Pazuzu could find me again or divert his attention to Narchan.


Ok, so that was the first of Avenger's Amazing Adventures. Hopefully it was at least mildly interesting; any reader input, questions, comments, similar stories, etc. would be welcome.

It is good to see you have not ditched this old game... I have been playing off and on since May and have become very lonely just diving on my own. I was begining to wonder where all the people had gone... Well i have not had any close calls for a while. I don't dive very deep seeing as i have no friends to help in times of need. level 23 Dwarf Palidan at 750ft and steadily increasing my depth. I want to get to 1500ft at level 25 and then hunt for stat pots like mad... Hopefully I will find a blessed esp weapon soon... I hate running into hounds because they don't seem to be evil in nature which makes them impossible to detect without using detect creature and another spot in my inventory. fellowship is greatly missed!!!

I would consider moving servers except it would be hard to catch you two... Well keep posting and i will keep checking!

Hey Roterdam, good to see we still have newer players keeping MAngband alive. I don't really play very much anymore; I think my highest char is level 15, but I check the servers once in awhile, so if I see you or anyone else on, I'll log in and hang out for a while. I may start playing seriously again too. I've got a couple more stories to post, but I'm kinda waiting for some more reader response first. Hopefully I'll see you in-game soon.
